Lia Thomas, who competes for Penn’s women’s team after competing for the men’s team the past three seasons, will be allowed to compete at the women national championships as long as she meets testosterone requirements.
Thomas, a transgender swimmer who has turned in the top times in the nation in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events this season, had her path to the championships cleared during an NCAA subcommittee meeting Thursday. As long as she meets the NCAA’s current testosterone thresholds, she is expected to be allowed to compete.
U.S. Swimming did not have such a policy in place, though, when the NCAA made that it announcement. U.S. Swimming then reportedly updated its policy in a way that might have kept Thomas out of the championships, but the NCAA said Thursday that policy will be considered in future years. The NCAA’s policy, at least for this season, is that the swimmers will only need to document “sport-specific testosterone levels” for four weeks ahead of the championships.
Penn has issued a statement in support of Thomas, and, per Yahoo, 300 swimmers from around the country issued an open letter supporting her, too. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
