Nearly €1m spent by Government on reports into Defence Forces

The Labour Party's defence spokesman Mark Wall said that the amount of money spent on reports in the Defence Forces would be 'galling' for members who are looking for additional resources.

The Government has spent nearly €1 million on reports into the Defence Forces in the last six years, new figures have shown.There are also concerns about the treatment of women in the force following the emergence of the Women of Honour group. They have spoken about their experiences with misogyny, sexual harassment and bullying within the force.

In response to a parliamentary question from Labour leader Ivana Bacik, Tánaiste and Defence Minister Micheál Martin confirmed the amount spent on the commissioning of reports on matters pertaining to the Defence Forces in each of the years 2018 to 2022 and to date in 2023.

Spending on reports increased again in 2022, rising to €413,439.97. To date in 2023, the Tánaiste confirmed, spending on reports has been €96,197.24.“The Government seems to have no issue forking our hundreds of thousands of euros on reports.,” he said.
