Rescue efforts continue in Nepal as the country grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides. The death toll has surpassed 600, with thousands still missing. International aid and support, including a UK rapid deployment team, have been deployed to assist in the relief efforts.
Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority confirmed on Saturday that the death toll from the recent flooding and landslides has reached 626, with nearly 2,500 people still missing.
The District Administration Office in Chitwan reported that out of the 233 bodies recovered, only four could be identified due to the advanced state of decomposition. DNA samples were being collected for future identification. As rescue operations entered their fourth day, Nepal Army spokesman Brig Gen Raja Ram Basnet announced a temporary suspension of helicopter operations due to adverse weather conditions.
Meanwhile, a rapid deployment team from the UK was set to arrive in Kathmandu to assist British nationals and their families affected by the disaster. Among the missing are over 30 British nationals, including two teenagers. Essex nurse Rajendra Pudasaini, president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association UK, launched a fundraising campaign to support the victims, stating that Nepal was experiencing an 'irreplaceable loss' due to global warming.
Bishal Nath Upreti, president of the Nepal Centre for Disaster Management, described the devastation as akin to a 'tsunami from the sky', with entire villages wiped out. Nepalese officials reported extensive damage to infrastructure, with numerous bridges destroyed and nearly 25 miles of roads damaged, complicating search and rescue efforts. Many of those missing were pilgrims en route to the sacred Hindu site of Mount Kailash, according to The Trekkers' Society, a Nepalese tour operator
