Passengers are being warned to only travel if absolutely necessary on Christmas Eve after fresh rail strikes were announced between 24 and 27 December.
During previous strikes, Network Rail advised passengers to only travel by train if absolutely necessary.
When asked what advice it would be giving to people trying to make Christmas travel plans, Network Rail directedtowards the previous advice issued and said further information would be released closer to the date. Network Rail’s latest offer included a 5 per cent pay rise this year and 4 per cent next year, as well as no compulsory redundancies for workers who are not managers until January 2025. Downing Street has urged the RMT to accept the deal, while Government minister Nick Gibb urged the union not to “hold the country to ransom” and to keep talking to their employers.
The RMT also rejected a separate offer from the Rail Delivery Group on Sunday, which offered 4 per cent pay rises for 2022 and 2023, and no compulsory redundancies before April 2024. Mr Lynch has insisted he does not want strikes to go ahead before Christmas but argued that his members are being forced into action by the Government not allowing train operators a proper mandate to negotiate on pay and conditions.programme: “We regret the inconvenience that we are causing but this inconvenience is being caused by the Government who are running the playbook and the strategy for the companies and directing what’s going on.
