The green space has been described as a “waste of money” by sources amid claims that there are not enough staff to monitor it.

A new “zen garden” at Arbour Hill Prison installed at a reputed cost of €10,000 may never be used, the Irish Sunday Mirror has learned.

Works were carried out by inmates themselves on the relaxation space in the jail that houses killer dad Sanjeev Chada and triple murderer Brian Hennessy. But the garden – which boasts a Japanese miniature koi fish pond – now lies in disrepair and is out of bounds to prisoners. A source said: “It’s like no thought went into this before work began.”

A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service confirmed a garden at the jail was refurbished but refused to comment on what security measures were in place.
