It will be the first time that in-person registration will no longer be required since civil registration was introduced in 1864, when Ireland was under British rule.

New parents will be able to register the birth of their child online rather than having to visit their local civil registration office.

The change has been announced by Heather Humphreys, the Minister for Social Protection, as part of a government move to make more public services online. Every year, parents have to turn up in person with their new baby to register their birth at their local civil registration office.
