The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has introduced new rules
From today, drivers will be subject to new regulations as the DVSA tightens its grip on driving test bookings. As of March 31, motorists are now permitted to make only two alterations to a car driving test booking, significantly reducing the previous allowance of up to six changes.
The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency has stated that any people requiring additional modifications after utilising both changes will be compelled to cancel their test and rebook, potentially facing long waiting lists. In a post on X, the agency cautioned: "From March 31 you will only be able to make 2 changes to a car driving test booking. If you need to make more changes after you have used your 2 changes, you will need to cancel your test and book a new one." This measure represents the initial phase of a broader revamp set to unfold over the forthcoming months, with the aim of combating booking abuse and enhancing test accessibility. From May 12, learners will be solely accountable for booking and managing their own tests via GOV.UK – rendering it unlawful for driving instructors or third parties to do so on their behalf.Learners will now be required to verify their identity and agree to new terms and conditions before taking the test. The DVSA has stated that friends or family can still assist, but only if the learner is present and completes as much of the process themselves as possible. From June 9 onwards, additional restrictions will further tighten the system, limiting how far appointments can be rescheduled. Learners will only be permitted to change their test to one of the three closest centres to their original booking, putting an end to the practice of securing slots nationwide and subsequently relocating them. These modifications apply solely to car driving tests across England, Scotland, and Wales. Authorities have stated that these reforms aim to make the system more equitable and reduce lengthy waiting times, which have left many learners struggling to secure a slot. However, learners are cautioned that the stricter rules could result in some drivers losing money or being forced to postpone their test if their circumstances change more than twice.
