According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects 20% of youth in the United States, which is a big reason behind these new protocols released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
This is the first time in 15 years the group has tackled this topic.
“These are welcome. They come at just the right time,” said Dr. Roy Kim, a pediatric endocrinologist for Cleveland Clinic. The new guidelines go as far as recommending weight-loss medications for kids ages 12 and older and, in extreme situations, even bariatric surgery for severely obese teenagers. “There is, I think, a popular notion that children you have a weight issue, have a high BMI are just going to outgrow it,” Kim said, noting that a young child has about a 40 to 50% chance of being obese as an adult if they’re obese as a child.
The new guidelines also include intensive behavioral and lifestyle treatment with at least 26 hours of face-to-face counseling.
