Many Pit Bull terriers are to be banned in Ireland due to new government rules classifying them as XL Bully dogs. The ban will be implemented in stages, starting with a prohibition on importing, breeding, selling, and re-homing XL Bullies from October 1st. By February 1st, 2025, owning an XL Bully without a Certificate of Exemption will be illegal.
They will be classed as an XL Bully dog which are being outlawed nationwide depending on their height.

She said: "While there are a series of subjective criteria contained in this standard to support the identification of an XL Bully dog there is one size criteria that is definitive - an adult male dog has a height not less than 20 inches at the withers and 19 inches for female."The Minister was responding to a series of questions on the issue from Monaghan Sinn Fein TD Matt Carthy.
