A group of anesthesiologists is pushing for changes in their profession to limit the pollution arising from inhaled gases.

. This resulted in a reduction of carbon dioxide from the system's largest hospital alone that was equivalent to taking 360 passenger vehicles off the road each year. The health system also saved about $1.2 million that year.

The UK's National Health Service Lothian system in Scotland decommissioned leaky nitrous oxide central piping systems in two hospital sites. The resulting carbon dioxide reductions were comparable to 7600 flights from Paris to New York in a single year. "The first time you try something new, you are less likely to do it elegantly," she said."So often the perception is, 'I don't like that way, it's not as good as the way I'm doing it,' but the reality is, 'I'm not as good at the way I'm doing that as I am at the other thing.'"

The app includes an estimate of carbon emissions for anesthesia, which is broken down in terms of equivalent emissions for driving. This makes it easier to understand the impact of different choices of gases in comparison with presenting abstract numbers about CO2, Hopf explained.
