Siobhan O'Connor: As a new mum, I feel I've been ripped away from my kids to return to work
Is my baby hungry? Has she taken the bottle?
The US Netflix show Workin’ Moms features breastfeeding mothers parading around their busy offices carrying freshly pumped bottles, their produce clutched to them like a badge of honour. Sure, breast milk is the most natural thing in the world but I’m not nearly as brave, Irish attitudes to breastfeeding are far more prudish.“Oh god yes it’s great to be back”, I say hoping my game face is camouflaging my tears.
Working moms know that all through college we were sold a lie. We were trained to believe we could crash through the metaphorical glass ceiling, earn huge money and rear our children, but it’s unfeasible to have it all. If our employers are gracious enough to allow us, we go part-time or take on less to prioritise our family. Is this not recognised as rightly contributing to society?
The International Women’s Day #BalanceforBetter was bandied about on Friday with no real explanation of how women and families will be helped to juggle it all. In 2017 she made history breastfeeding her three-month-old baby, Alia whilst passing important legislation.
