Minister Michael McGrath claimed that the decision to implement the measures was 'precautionary'. OmicronVariant COVID19Ireland

Minister Michael McGrath has claimed Ireland's new restrictions will be removed "quite quickly" if the Omicron variant is less dangerous than initially feared.

He told RTE's The Week in Politics: "The government has accepted the advice of NPHET in relation to where we stand right now, and it is because the incidence of Delta has stabilised but is at a higher level than we would like. "Is it more transmissible, how does it interact with the vaccine for example, is it more dangerous at the level of each individual whom it infects.

He called on the country to “pull together as a nation again” to get through what he acknowledged is now a fourth wave of Covid. Closing time will be midnight, but going to the bar to order is gone, a max of six can sit at a table and multiple table bookings are banned again.
