The Liberal Democrat manifesto promises compensation for women born in the 1950s impacted by State Pension age changes.
The Liberal Democrats have launched their Party manifesto which promises to maintain the State Pension Triple Lock, in a move similar to that of Labour and the Conservatives. They have also pledged to ensure that women born in the 1950s who have been affected by changes to the State Pension age are “finally treated fairly and properly compensated”.
Dozens of MPs unanimously called for a vote in Parliament last month on whether compensation should be given to women born in the 1950s. Some 21 MPs took part in a House of Commons debate, secured by the SNP’s Patricia Gibson, which saw cross-party support for a compensation plan to be put in place for more than 3.6 million women affected by the changes.
Top Money Stories Today Last week, the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign wrote to shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves, following her comments on compensation for 1950s-born women made during a press conference in Edinburgh. The WASPI campaign said the shadow chancellor appeared to contradict Sir Keir Starmer who had previously said a Labour government would respond to the Ombudsman “at pace and reach a judgement”, leaving the door open to compensation but still not committing.
In recent polling, some 68 per cent of the public say that successive governments got things wrong and fair and fast compensation should now be paid to those affected. The Liberal Democrats, Greens and Scottish National Party have all made pledges to ensure WASPI women are properly compensated.
