Work has begun on transforming a former curry house into a tapas restaurant and bar. The Chandelier, in Long Eaton, closed down in May 2022 after more than 30 years of serving bhajis and bhunas to the local community.
The corner site, in Derby Road, will be given a contemporary, homely look. Now cleared of the old furnishings, the black and white stripy wallpaper will be replaced and the huge glass chandelier which hangs near the bar will be removed. The business will be called Limas Tapas and Social - limas means limes in Spanish and the entrance will be via Lime Grove.
As well as serving tapas, customers will be able to pop in for drinks at the 100-seater venue. Limas is set to open at the end of August or early September depending on how long the makeover takes.A spokesman said: "It's a huge building and a big project. There's a lot to do but we'll get there. This end of town is up and coming. The Mill and Brook pub has reopened. It should be good, I'm excited.
"We're keeping the original wooden floor but the wallpaper is coming off. We'll decorate throughout and expose a bit of brick if we can. The bar will be relocated to the raised platform." The new restaurant and bar is expected to generate around 15 full-time and part-time jobs. The Chandelier was hit hard by coronavirus restrictions and struggled to recover financially after the pandemic. In its place came Chandelier Express, just a few doors down Derby Road, and adjoining restaurant Land of the Five Rivers.
