Houston Methodist Willowbrook surgeon performs successful, advanced transanal tumor surgery
After weeks of discomfort and trouble using the restroom, Kenneth McGehee visited his doctor, unaware that he was about to become the first patient in northwest Houston to undergo a new procedure.
McGehee was referred to surgeons at Houston Methodist Willowbrook for the first surgery of its kind in the northwest Houston area, effectively removing the cancer with minimal effect on McGehees bowels and overall health. “With this new technique that is only being done at a few academic centers around the world, I was able to save his sphincters and make a connection between the colon and the remainder of the rectum,” Marines said. “The procedure is called transanal TME, or total mesorectal excision.
“If it would have been stage 2 or 3, I would have had to go through chemotherapy and radiation,” he said. “With them getting all of it the first time I’m not going to have to go through that radiation. If people would get checked out earlier then they wouldn’t have to worry about what I’ve gone through.”
