A New York couple are charged with conspiring to launder billions of dollars in cryptocurrency stolen in a 2016 hack of a virtual currency exchange.

As the biggest cryptocurrencies continue to gain in value, they are increasingly becoming bigger sources of revenue for charities.“The message to criminals is clear: Cryptocurrency is not a safe haven. We can and we will follow the money, no matter what form it takes,” Deputy Atty. Gen. Lisa Monaco said in a video statement released by the Justice Department.

Investigators using what Monaco described as “old-fashioned police work” found a wallet containing more than 2,000 bitcoin accounts and followed the trail to accounts at a dark web criminal marketplace called AlphaBay that was dismantled by the Justice Department in 2017.
