The chair of the New York State Democratic Party apologized Monday after comparing Buffalo mayoral nominee India Walton, a Black woman, to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.with Spectrum News. He doubled down in a defiant statement issued through the state party before finally issuing an apology amid criticism from other Democrats.in June, in a victory over four-term incumbent Byron Brown.
“The statement was totally unacceptable and the analogy used was outrageous and beyond absurd,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer said in a statement.Jacobs’s remarks “embarrassing for our party.” And state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi called on Jacobs to resign.. “Comparing the endorsement of @Indiawaltonbflo to endorsing David Duke of the KKK is outrageously racist. You need to resign—today.”
The tweet included a screenshot of Jacobs’s initial remarks to Spectrum News, with sections underlined in red.in a Facebook post“Let’s start with the obvious: I am a working class Black mother, a Registered Nurse, and non-profit executive,” Walton said. “I was duly nominated by Democratic voters who share my vision of a safe, healthy Buffalo, where everyone has housing, no one has lead poisoning, and City Hall isn’t raided by the FBI.
