Giants punter and Scotland native Jamie Gillan remained in London and did not travel back with the team in order to resolve a passport issue.
Gillan, 25, was born and raised in Scotland before he moved to southern Maryland as a teenager when his father, Colin, a navigator in the Scottish Royal Air Force, was transferred, so he decided to relocate his immediate family. Jamie traveled here under a NATO visa because of his father's military standing.
Nicknamed"The Scottish Hammer," Gillan and his powerful left leg have gained quite a reputation since high school. When he was signed by the Cleveland Browns three years ago, Gillan should have had his visa changed to a work visa. An apparent oversight was made at the time and a change was never made."Slipped through the cracks," one of the individuals said.
Gillan and the Giants were aware of the issue prior to traveling overseas, another individual familiar with the situation told NorthJersey.com, and it's likely he would have been able to return to the U.S. with the team under his old visa. But, all involved believed the best course of action was to resolve any lingering issues before Gillan returned.
The Giants are planning to have Gillan back with them prior to the weekend, in time for him to play in Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens at MetLife Stadium. As a matter of precaution, just in case Gillan's situation unexpectedly lingers, the Giants will have a workout of free agent punters.
