Among the raft of measures in the NHS workforce plan is one to introduce a medical degree apprenticeship so students can “earn while they learn” ⚠️ But senior doctors have warned the plans could put patient safety at risk elle_odwyer reports:
He added: “It is very likely that if we were still in the EU, this kind of programme would not be possible as it would go against the work that has gone into standardising the training of doctors in European countries.”
He said students trying to work at the same time as studying for an “intense” medical degree would be “very difficult”, and it was not clear how NHS doctors would find the time to adequately train or supervise them. The Government is also consulting with the medical regulator and universities over reducing medical degrees from five years to four.
She said: “Large questions again remain about who will support the training of doctors coming via this route.
