🔴 Hopes of a breakthrough in the ongoing NHS strikes have been dashed after Rishi Sunak declined an offer for a 10 per cent deal on nurses’ pay

Pat Cullen, the general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, suggested on Thursday her union would accept a new pay rise of 10 per cent this year after saying she could meet ministers “halfway” from the 19 per cent demand rejected by the government.

But government sources made clear that the offer of talks could only be about next year’s pay review, as the existing year’s settlement was closed. He replied: “What we’ve said is we want to have a grown-up, honest conversation with all union leaders about what is responsible, what is reasonable and what is affordable for our country when it comes to pay.

“That’s why the Government has written, all departments have written to all their unions inviting them for talks on Monday so that we can have those conversations talking about what’s affordable, what’s reasonable, what’s responsible for our country.
