The impact of alcohol costs upwards of £1 billion per year across society in Northern Ireland

A Belfast-based charity working with people with addictions is urging people to use Sober October to reset and evaluate their relationship with alcohol.

"That analysis was done some years ago and there hasn't been a significant shift. In fact, I'd say we're probably in a worse place now with alcohol than we have been in some considerable time given the increase in alcohol-related deaths, there has been a significant increase. A return to normality after the pandemic has also brought on other issues relating to drinking culture.

"During Covid, alcohol became a home drinking issue with bars closing, people work out they're able to consume and purchase more alcohol when they're at home. Alcohol use and purchase has become a big part of the weekly shop, people go for their food shopping and pick up a few bottles of wine on offer, or a box of beer that's cheaper than a box of Coke.
