.nicolearip talks about joining the SATC friend group, her new character on the reboot, and more
“They’re like all the different voices in your head,” says Nicole Ari Parker of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha, the cosmo-swilling quartet who madeessential viewing in the ’90s, and remain cultural touchstones nearly 20 years after it left the small screen. Unlike most fans of the show, Parker, who joins the cast in the feverishly anticipated reboot landing this week, says she never related to one of the original four friends in particular.
The mythology that has built up around the show’s costume department is justified, according to Parker. “It’s what you imagine,” she confirms. “Racks and racks of clothes with your name on; shoes and more shoes, and the phones are ringing [here she mimics an assistant talking into a receiver]: ‘Tell Louboutin we need a 39.5!’ They’re over-the-top, fantastic clothes, and after you put them on you’re like: ‘Yeah! This is Tuesday! This is how I pick up my kid from school.
Being part of a show that puts women who are firmly in mid-life front and center is one of the most exciting parts of joining the cast for the 51-year-old, who recalls an “amazing energy” around New York as filming got underway in the city. “I think that capturing these characters in the next chapter of their lives is fantastic, because it’s dispelling all of those unconscious myths we have,” she says.
“I’m glad that the writers and producers and Sarah Jessica Parker wanted to make that change, and wanted to do it right,” Parker says now. “The show now really reflects the city. It’s New York, you know?” Though the lack of diversity was “very obvious” to Parker back when she was tuning in as a fan, she say she “never went to the show to work that out for me. I just went to the show for what it was.” Although, she adds, laughing, “I felt bad for them that they didn’t have any Black girlfriends.
