England rugby's gain; Felix Jones work ethic and preparation are next level - Nienaber
Back-to-back Rugby World Cup winning coach Jacques Nienaber has hailed Felix Jones’ role in delivering the William Webb Ellis trophy two times in a row.The Dublin-born former Leinster, Munster and Ireland star Jones has proved himself a brilliant coach in his right, very much plotting his own course.
“In South Africa in our set-up for the last Rugby World Cup he didn’t coach defence at all, he was a full-on attack. He was only involved with the attack.Nienaber hasn’t been surprised at the latest success or Jones — a great contributor to the Springbok set-up. “I would probably say Felix, in reality, took charge of our attack in 2022, that was when he could actually start being creative in the things that he wanted to do on attack.
“That’s why it wasn’t foreign for us to get him to fulfil that attack role for the ’Boks in 2019 and then he just continued stepping up as my defence coach when I became head coach.” The thinking goes something like this: Simon Easterby get to takes Farrell’s job and so needs a defence coach, which could mean Nienaber being approached.
The idea there is a huge number of Six Nations internationals flooding back into the UCD training base following a seven week absence is exciting — who to select, who to leave out, how to handle those who have held the fort, who needs rewarding for the part of the last while. “Because although you maybe only come on for 10/15 minutes there is still a massive, can I say, mental involvement in a big Test match.
