Motoring experts have claimed drivers could face fines of £1,000 if they make a key mistake with their lights

Motoring experts have claimed drivers could face fines of £1,000 if they make a key mistake with their lights. More modern vehicles have lights which come on automatically - and have done so since 2011.

In order to put the proper night-time lights on, the driver must take the daylight running lights and make sure they are switched onto the dipped beam. There is a very good reason for doing this - it would be very easy for some other car or lorry to go into the back of the unlit vehicle. Not only that, but there could be a significant financial penalty.

“Here at Select, we’ve heard countless reports of people failing to illuminate their headlights and taillights while driving in poor visibility in recent weeks, and there’s a fear motorists might mistakenly believe that their DRLs are sufficient in those sorts of conditions. They’re not! “And it would clearly be extremely foolish to rely on DRLs when the sun goes down, too. The most important thing to remember is that many DRL systems don’t automatically light the rear lights. If you want to be seen by the cars who are following you, be sure to click your headlights on.
