Mayor Ron Nirenberg, flanked by CPS Energy Board Chair Willis Mackey and San Antonio Water System Board Chair Jelynne Lablanc Jamison, speaks during a joint meeting of CPS’ and SAWS’ boards in September 2022 at CPS headquarters. Nirenberg recently expressed support for a plan recommended by CPS staff to close the utility’s coal operation in the next half decade and generate more of its electricity from natural gas-fired power plants and solar farms.

Despite some criticisms of the option, Nirenberg’s support for CPS Energy’s preferred plan is a strong signal that a majority of the utility’s trustees will approve the plan when they vote Jan. 23.Missed chance or good balance? Plan for CPS Energy’s future generation mix headed for board vote One megawatt is roughly enough to power 200 homes on a summer day. CPS today operates about 550 megawatts of solar.

But CPS and Nirenberg have argued that those alternative plans — with greater reliance on renewables — would likely leave CPS without enough of its own power supply and force it to face volatile prices on the state’s wholesale power market, where most of the power is generated by gas- and coal-fired power plants, anyway.

“When we experienced Storm Uri, natural gas failed us at that point,” District 7 Councilmember Ana Sandoval said. “We can prepay gas. We’ve put more gas in storage. Our hedging program has been revised since Winter Storm Uri to be a lot more thoughtful,” he said.Missed chance or good balance? Plan for CPS Energy’s future generation mix headed for board vote
