The Bulldogs will be the first true test the Longhorns have faced this season.

After wins last week over UTEP and Houston Christian, Texas and forward Dillon Mitchell look forward to a sizable step up in competition when Gonzaga visits Austin on Wednesday.AUSTIN — Dillon Mitchell offered a modest shrug before answering the question, one that’s been asked of college hoops denizens for about four years now: “How do you plan on defending Drew Timme?”

One year later, Timme will lead the second-ranked Bulldogs into Wednesday’s marquee non-conference matchup against No. 11 Texas at the Moody Center. It will be the first true test the Longhorns face on their new homecourt after opening the season with breezy wins over UTEP and Houston Christian. For Texas, it’ll take the entire village to stop one of the most unique players in college hoops, a vestige of an era when earthbound bigs would isolate in the post and feast in the pick-and-roll. Beard will have to send waves of defenders at Timme, trapping or digging down whenever the ball makes its way to him.

“It’s not just him , we got to prepare for the whole team,” Mitchell said. “It’s just being physical, having technique, knowing our defense and continuing to play our brand of defense.”At 205 pounds, Mitchell is more of a perimeter defender, though he’s displayed good instincts rotating down and offering help-side defense with his explosive verticality. Senior Dylan Disu is the team’s de facto center, though Beard tends not to assign positional labels anyway.

Hunter, Carr and Rice have played well with one another in various five-man lineups. Freshman guard Arterio Morris hasn’t found his rhythm yet, but the five-star freshman scored 19 and hit four 3s off the bench in an exhibition game blowout of Arkansas in late October. And Allen has been his usual rocksteady self as a versatile wing with a savvy mid-range game and above-average rebounding ability.
