Heading into Saturday’s slate of games, the Big 12 owned the lowest average margin of victory among all Division I conferences. Exactly half of the league’s games had been decided by five points or fewer over the first three weeks of competition.
And true to form, the first meeting between Texas and West Virginia this season continued the league’s trend of compelling, if not always wondrous, contests. The Longhorns defeated the Mountaineers 69-61 Saturday night in a game where the lead traded hands eight times and neither team trailed by more than seven at any point. The win moved Texas to 9-2 under interim coach Rodney Terry.
Texas was bodying up on the other end, matching WVU’s physicality. But senior forward Tre Mitchell managed to enjoy some success against the team he spent the 2021-22 season with. Mitchell got off to a torrid start against the Longhorns, scoring a game-high nine points with five rebounds in the first half to help West Virginia take a 28-26 lead into halftime.
