No damages awarded after alleged silverfish infestation in rented house
Silverfish, Tenant Rights, Rental Dispute

A tenant's claim for €8,000 in damages for an alleged silverfish infestation was rejected by the RTB. The tribunal found insufficient evidence of a harmful infestation and noted the tenant left the property without allowing the landlord to investigate or rectify the situation.

Noreen Alexander Whelan said her family left the house within days of spotting the insects and disposed of their belongings over 'contamination' concerns. A woman who sought €8,000 in damages for 'mental distress' after allegedly encountering a silverfish 'infestation' in a rented Co. Donegal house has failed in her case.

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) tribunal dismissed the claim, stating the landlord was not given an opportunity to address the issue before the tenant vacated. While a few silverfish were observed, the tribunal concluded it did not constitute a harmful infestation requiring immediate abandonment of the property
