For fans in Seattle, New York and Philadelphia who spent October and early November shouting, “We want Houston!!”, it was Houston they got. All the Astros and the fans wanted, meanwhile, was a World Series trophy. And now, it’s theirs.

Houston Astros relief pitcher Ryan Pressly and Houston Astros Jose Altuve celebrate as the Astros beat the Phillies 4-1 in Game 6 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, in Houston.Led by manager Dusty Baker, baseball’s coolest renaissance man at age 73, and propelled by a new generation of young players alongside their established stars, the Astros once again are World Series champions.

Houston will salute its champions with a downtown parade Monday, and Baker will be front and center as the oldest manager to lead a World Series championship team, adding a manager’s title to the title he won with the Dodgers during his playing days. That bought Alvarez to the plate, and he drove a 99 mph fastball 450 feet atop the batter’s background in dead center field. The ball left Alvarez’s bat at 113 mph, which may have well equaled the decibel level as the capacity crowd screamed its approval.

“The individual awards are cool, but wining the World Series is what we play for,” he said. “You dream about winning the World Series, but at the time of the dream, it just feels so far away. And now it's here.” The pitching staff, fortunately, was up to the challenge, with notable exceptions being Justin Verlander’s early-game struggles in Game 1 and the five-homer outburst against Lance McCullers Jr. in Game 3.

Philadelphia arrived in Houston buoyed by the upbeat strains of “High Hopes,” the theme song of their late radio voice Harry Kalas, and fortified by the bat of Bryce Harper, whose two-run homer clinched the series against San Diego, and seized home-field advantage by overcoming a five-run Astros lead to win in extra innings, 6-5.
