As he gave a rousing speech to party members today Eamon Ryan revealed that the word"fight" is no longer part of the Green lexicon.Instead, it is terms like passive, stubborn resistance that best describes the party's approach to protecting the planet these days.
Those running in the local and European Parliament elections were told to take the campaign to the doors where the reception is apparently warmer, and not in a planet threatening way.If the Greens' critics view them as inflexible on environmental issues, the party is nothing less than nimble when it comes to forming governments."I think we should go into Government because it is not a time for sitting on the bench," Mr Ryan said.
In the meantime, there was a pledge to redouble efforts to get flood-damaged homes in Midleton back in shape and then prepare for the more extreme weather events that are to come. There was a message of hope though, as he added it is still possible to"stop runaway climate change".
