Nominations for the replacement of Leo Varadkar as Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach are expected to open this week, with candidates putting their names forward until Saturday or Sunday. If only one candidate is nominated, they will be declared the winner, but if there are multiple candidates, hustings will take place and voting will occur the week after Easter.
The dust has barely settled on Leo Varadkar announcing that he is stepping down as Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach but we could know who is in the running to replace him by Saturday. The Irish Mirror understands that nominations could open as early as Thursday morning and close on either Saturday or Sunday. Sources told the Irish Mirror that the Fine Gael Executive Council would meet at Fine Gael HQ on Mount Street on Wednesday evening where the next steps forward would be discussed.
Nominations are expected to open on Thursday and TDs and Ministers will start putting their names forward. It is understood that people will be able to declare until Saturday or Sunday when nominations will close. If only one candidate puts their name forward, they will be deemed the winner. However, if there is more than one, hustings are expected to take place as soon as next week and candidates will put their case forward to voters. It is understood that voting could then take place the week after Easter and that the same rules as the 2017 leadership contest will apply. This will see an electoral college system implemented. This sees votes weighted in different ways. 65% of the vote is given to the Fine Gael parliamentary party, 25% to ordinary Fine Gael members and 10% to Fine Gael local representatives
