The Columbus parks department ordered Norfolk Southern railroad to cease and desist repair operations on a Scioto River bridge as waste piled up.
Anyone walking along the Scioto Mile in Downtown this past week might have caught sight of a heron searching for fish or a group of ducks paddling down the waterway. But when they passed the Norfolk Southern Railway bridge near Main Street, it was a decidedly different scene.
Columbus Recreation and Parks on Thursday issued a cease-and-desist order to the company after being made aware of the debris by The Dispatch, because its permit for “non-park use” along the Scioto Mile had expired late last year. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is also investigating the alleged dumping after The Dispatch brought it to the agency's attention, according to spokesperson James Lee.
Connor Spielmaker, a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern Corporation, said the Atlanta-based company would clean up debris along the shoreline, but it was unlikely that debris had fallen into the river in the course of normal work.
