It will use the reserves to repair potholes and other highway maintenance
North Northamptonshire Council will spend £1.5m on highway maintenance and improvements after it underspent in its first year of operations. The new unitary authority took over in April 2021 and its Executive released financial figures for its first full year last week.
The council was formed after an investigation commissioned by the government said Northamptonshire County Council was being financially mismanaged. It absorbed the roles of Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering, and Wellingborough district councils and began operations on April 1 2021.When it was formed, NNC was given an annual budget of £292.5m for 2021/22, for use in education, support services, and other general operations. Council papers show the council underspent on this by £1.
NNC and its neighbour authority West Northamptonshire Council announced a new highways contract with Kier worth £30m, in June. The firm will oversee the county's roads for 7 years and be responsible for maintaining local roads, footpaths, signage and drainage, and repairing potholes. I believe sound financial management is essential and I am very conscious that this is taxpayer’s money. I therefore feel it is important that this underspend is used to invest in important areas for our residents and communities such as improving the quality of our roads, repairing potholes, white lining, sign cleaning and cutting back vegetation.”
