The Northern, Great Northumberland, Humber and Mersey forests will benefit from the scheme.
Forestry Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith said the scheme would tackle climate change and improve health. The plans to plant 2,300 hectares of trees will focus on areas with the lowest woodland cover.Up to one million trees will be planted to make the Great Northumberland Forest
Mixed woodlands are also better at weathering hazards such as wildfires and storms than the monoculture timber forests and can help reduce flooding by slowing the flow of water.
