The swimmer from Wollaston won double gold in Tokyo last year
Paralympic champion Maisie Summers-Newton added yet another gold medal to her collection yesterday . The 20-year-old won the 100m breaststroke by over 10 seconds at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Born with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, Summers-Newton was inspired to try swimming after watching British swimmer Simmonds compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Alongside her Paralympic golds, she also won two world titles earlier this year in Portugal.Unlike Tokyo, which had strict Covid guidelines, yesterday's meeting was not staged behind closed doors. This meant the 20-year old was able to enjoy a vocal crowd, including many family and friends, for the first time.
The Wollaston swimmer said: “It’s really special, I didn’t expect that roar and it really brought a smile to my face, just trying to spot all my family was hard. It’s the first time my family have been able to watch me in a few years so it’s a fantastic result, I couldn’t have asked for more.
