The foreign secretary told the House of Commons today that while she would prefer a negotiated settlement with the European Union, the “onerous” restrictions of the protocol and the bloc’s refusal to make concessions gave ministers no choice but to act unilaterally.She insisted the move was compatible with international law and was the best chance of restoring a power sharing government in Northern Ireland.
