Northern Ireland kick off a new UEFA Nations League campaign on Thursday night
It's been some journey for Trai Hume over the past four years. After a breakthrough season in the Irish League on loan at Ballymena United in 2020 Hume came straight back into the starting XI at his parent club club. the following year. But given his progression he was attracting the attention of clubs in England and was snapped up by Sunderland in January 2022. The 22-year-old has continued to excel becoming a mainstay for club and country.
"It’s been a fast process. I went on loan to Ballymena at the age of 18/19 and here I am now 22 playing for my country. I am trying to impress and play at the best level I can. I'd like to say I have a lot of leadership qualities but I know a lot of people in the squad do as well. "I wouldn’t really say it is a big change but this is international football and the senior men's team so it could be a bit of a difference but I’ll try and take it in my stride."
Hume has had a great start to the season with the Black Cats, who currently sit top of the Championship having won four out of four so far. He is determined to keep working hard for his club and in a Northern Ireland shirt as they look to continue to improve. He added: “We want to take it game by game and there are still things we can improve on on the pitch and as staff and players we know that.
