The Northern Lights could be visible across Lancashire and other parts of northern England tonight , according to forecasters.
BBC Weather has predicted clear skies over the region tonight, which will increase the chances of catching a glimpse of the stunning light display, also known as the aurora borealis. The stunning natural phenomenon is set to light up the night sky on Friday and to witness this incredible astronomical event, it's best to find a location with minimal light pollution.
On X, formerly Twitter, BBC Weather said: "Next chance to see the Northern Lights will be Friday night. Sightings expected across Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland with clear skies."Chance of briefly becoming visible from northern England and North Wales too. #auroraborealis" The Northern Lights are the result of particles from the sun being carried on solar winds and then interacting with the Earth's atmosphere after being channelled to the polar regions by the planet's magnetic field. According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, different gases have different effects on the colour of the light display, which often appears as green, pink or purple.
If you want to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, you should head to an area that has clear skies and is free from light pollution. You won't need any special equipment as the lights can be seen with the naked eye very clearly.
