The Northern Lights have made a spectacular appearance over Ireland on the first day of 2025, providing a stunning natural light show for skywatchers. The aurora borealis was visible across various parts of the country as darkness fell, thanks to heightened solar activity.
It's the first day of 2025 and it's off with a bang thanks to the spectacular natural light show that is painting Irish skies. Aurora Alerts Ireland have confirmed that the lights are being sighted as nightfall cloaked the country. The atmospheric phenomenon will be visible tonight in some areas, and you can track it using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA provides a thirty-minute forecast for the Aurora .
The captivating lights are the result of collisions between gas particles in our atmosphere and charged particles that are constantly being shot out from the sun's atmosphere. The bright colours of the auroras are different based on the type of gas particles that are colliding at any given time. The frequency of occurrence of solar flare activity varies with the 11-year solar cycle, and as we are at a particularly active time right now, this is why the northern lights are seen more frequently. To ensure a good view, the general rule is that the further north you are the better, but Ireland's dark sky zones are also good vantage points. Ireland is home to two officially recognised dark sky places, Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve and Mayo International Dark Sky Park. It feels like we are able to view this heavenly delight more than ever before, and Johan Jaques, Chief Meteorologist at KISTERS explained to RSVP Live exactly why. 'The main reason we are seeing an increasing number of aurora sightings over Irish skies, at lower latitudes than we’re perhaps used to, is due to heightened solar activity' said Johan. 'We are currently approaching the peak of solar activity in Solar Cycle 25. This cycle will continue until 2030 but will peak next year'
