A geomagnetic storm is predicted to bring the Northern Lights to Ireland tonight. While not as intense as previous displays, the aurora is expected to be visible, especially in Donegal and Mayo. The increased frequency of aurora sightings is attributed to heightened solar activity.

The Northern Lights , also known as the aurora borealis , are predicted to illuminate the Irish sky tonight. This celestial display is made possible by a geomagnetic storm detected earlier this week, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is providing a 30-minute forecast to track its progress. While this week's aurora may not be as intense as the spectacular show witnessed in October, it's expected to be visible, particularly in the northern counties of Donegal and Mayo.

Astronomy Ireland's David Moore told the Irish Sun that although tonight's display won't match the brilliance seen in October or May of last year, predictions indicate clear visibility. He highlighted the advantage Donegal and Mayo have due to their northerly location and reduced light pollution compared to southern counties. Moore emphasized that darker locations and a clear, cloudless night are key factors in observing the aurora. Ireland boasts two officially recognized dark sky places: the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve and the Mayo International Dark Sky Park. For those hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, finding a dark spot and following NOAA's forecast are recommended. The increased frequency of aurora borealis sightings throughout 2024 can be attributed to heightened solar activity, according to Johan Jaques, Chief Meteorologist at KISTERS. We are currently nearing the peak of Solar Cycle 25, which lasts until 2030 but reaches its maximum intensity next year. This cycle correlates with increased sunspot activity and the emission of more charged particles, known as solar wind, which interact with Earth's magnetic field to create the mesmerizing aurora displays.
