Northern Virginia counties are freezing or slashing property-tax rates to counteract rising costs of living

Some residents and local civic groups seeking less government spending noted that even with the tax-rate freezes and cuts, residents still will see their annual tax bills increase — by an average of $395 in Arlington, for example, and $465 in Fairfax. The median sale price for homes in the region is up to $650,000, compared with $519,000 in 2019, according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors.

The county board also steered $6.1 million to pay increases for public safety personnel hired before June 30 of last year, a move meant to address problems with recruitment and retention inside a police department where morale has been low.In a first for Fairfax County, personal property taxes on automobiles were based on 85 percent of the vehicle’s assessed value instead of the full amount, in an acknowledgment of cars’ rising values.

Most county employees will get merit increases of 5.25 percent. Uniformed firefighters and sheriff’s deputies will receive an 8.5 percent bump in pay, and uniformed police officers will see a 13.5 percent increase.
