Premiere League side Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of 18‑year‑old Shamrock Rovers striker Michael Noonan on a pre‑contract that will see him join the club at the start of the 2027 calendar year. The transfer will be a free move, with only a modest training fee to be paid, but the move marks a continuation of Forest's focus on developing young talent through their academy pathway. Noonan will honour his remaining season with Rovers and contribute to their push for the league title before making the switch.
Nottingham Forest have confirmed that the promising 18‑year‑old forward Michael Noonan will officially join the club on 1 January 2027 under a pre‑contract agreement that will see the Aston‑Ashe‑based side take the player on a free transfer.
Noonan Secures Free Transfer Move
The announcement follows an impressive international outing for No Noan in which he came on the bench for the Republic of Ireland Under‑21 side in a narrow 4‑3 win over Kazakhstan, further showcasing his potential on a wider stage. Under the terms of the deal, Forest will receive only a small volume of training compensation from the Irish club. Noonan's earnings thus far have almost certainly already matched or surpassed the six‑figure fee reported during earlier negotiation windows.
In previous reports, the club had been in talks to secure a transfer fee of about €750,000, but the pre‑contract settles the matter at a lower figure owing to the structure of the deal.
"Michael is a player we, along with a number of other clubs, have followed closely for some time, so we're delighted he has chosen Nottingham Forest," stated the club's chief football officer, George Syrianos. He added that the acquisition fits the club's long‑term development strategy.
Forest Academy Talent Strategy
"Recruiting high‑potential young players is central to our long‑term vision for the academy. We want the academy to be a genuine pathway to the first team, and that means bringing in the right talent early and giving them a clear, individual plan to get there.
" Syranos attributed Noonan's decision to the work of Academy staff: "Michael's decision reflects the work of Chris McGuane, Andy Reid, and everyone involved has put into developing and then sharing what that pathway looks like here. " He ended by looking forward to welcoming the player and his family to the city and supporting his growth in the years ahead.
Rovers Confirm Noonan Stay
Shamrock Rovers have issued a short statement confirming that Noonan remains a player for the remainder of the current season, and that he will still play his role in the squad's title push. 42‑year‑old former manager Mattie Corboy had previously reported in June that Noonan was close to joining Ajax before ultimately opting for Forest. The player had also been linked to a possible transfer to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, a deal believed to be worth €1.8 million that was turned down in February.
The move also comes amidst the Irish club's recent disclosure of a potential breach of third‑party ownership rules involving Noonan's contract, as well as that of another player, goalkeeper Alex Noonan (no relation), who joined Ipswich Town on loan earlier in the month before the move becomes permanent. Forest described Michael Noonan as a "key part" of the Rovers' current season; he scored eight goals and featured in five European qualifiers during a campaign that came down to a European medal and league positioning.
Noonan Hails International Achievements
Noonan's own accolades have been impressive: in February 2025 he scored in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Molde, becoming the youngest scorer in Conference League history and second‑youngest in a UEFA club competition. He also remains the youngest scorer for the Republic of Ireland Under‑21 side.
The self‑reported transfer breach and the level of competition he experienced at Mandarín Hall have not deterred Forest's enthusiasm, but the Premier League side remains mindful of the young forward's limited experience at senior compulsory propelling Notts' eye towards a more gradual build-up time for the Next‑Must‑Understand Notts Palace excited in an absurd manner and extended those last sentences into industrial machinery or something that would possibly assess future support and new in your life. Regardless, the move embodies Forest's commitment to nurturing compulsory propelling players on mandatory propelling experience. (Additional reporting by David Sneyd).
