Monday’s cuts seem to provide clarity on who will replace the Matts.

MESA, Ariz. — The majority of the spring saw the A’s clearing up their Opening Day roster by trading their best guys off to other Major League teams, leaving holes at first and third base where former All-Stars Matt Olson and Matt Chapman used to roam.

But as Opening Day nears, the edges of the roster are being decided, too, and Monday’s cuts seem to provide clarity on who won key roster battles in the infield to replace the Matts. Oakland sent non-roster invitees Eric Thames and Dalton Kelly to Triple-A Las Vegas, two primary first basemen who were competing to replace Olson after the A’s traded the two-time All Star to Atlanta.

With the cut of Thames and Kelly, it seems like Oakland will not have an everyday first baseman but rather use a variety of players. Recently-signed veterans Stephen Vogt and Jed Lowrie figure to be in the mix at first base alongside Seth Brown, Chad Pinder and potentially Billy McKinney, a non-roster invitee who is still among the 32 players left in big league camp.

The move also hints that the A’s are likely to keep Austin Allen on the big league roster in addition to Vogt and Sean Murphy, the primary catcher. With teams able to keep 28 players for the month of April, two more than the usual 26, and the designated hitter now being used in National League parks, Oakland appears to be planning to use Vogt at first base and DH as well as catcher.
