I live in the Eastmont Hills. Recently, I heard a loud scuffling noise coming from the second story deck at the back of my house. When I went to look, my deck was bedecked with a large group of birds that looked like a type of pigeon, although I had never seen them before.
There were plenty more on the deck and several would swoop down from and replace a few ground feeding. This went on for about 45 minutes. The display you observed of birds dropping down to feed on the ground is part of their natural behavior. As they forage in an area, the birds at the rear will fly to the front in what is called a “rolling flock.” This continuous motion means that all the birds have equal access to food, and that a feeding ground gets pretty well picked clean.
