A 23-year-old Oakland man was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for possessing guns that he also posed with on Instagram.

OAKLAND — An Oakland man was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for possessing three guns, in an investigation bolstered by the discovery that he posed with firearms on his Instagram account.

Donald Murray Jr., 24, of Oakland, was sentenced July 8 by U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam, court records show. Murray pleaded guilty last year to being a felon in possession of a firearm, and has spent more than a year out of jail. Murray was charged in December 2020, in connection with an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Federal agents, citing pictures from Murray’s Instagram account, obtained a search warrant for his Oakland home and discovered three firearms. One had been reported stolen. Murray wasn’t allowed to have guns due to a 2017 concealed weapon conviction, according to court records.

Murray spent the time out of custody going to college, getting a job, and staying out of trouble, his attorney Hanni Fakhoury wrote in a sentencing brief. “Today, he is a husband, a student, and an employee, thinking of his future for the first time, one that may take him away from Oakland in exchange for a better life,” Fakhoury wrote.
