Voters may be offered fresh tax cuts in a pre-election Budget before an October polling day, Jeremy Hunt has said.will be held in October.
Given there is a six-week “purdah” before polling day, which restricts government activity, it would mean Mr Hunt holding a Budget in the first half of September, immediately after the summer recess.But Labour claim scrapping the levy altogether would create a £46bn hole in the public finances. “But you can’t say at this stage whether you’re going to have the room to cut taxes further, because lots of things can change in the economy between now and then, but we do want people to know that, yes, we want to bring the tax burden down.
