From the moment Dooley’s shot hit the net to the conclusion of the game, there were five minutes and 57 seconds of play, during which Offaly scored 2-5 without reply to win by six points.
Johnny Dooley could go months without mention of 1994. And then, in a week, he might be hit with it three times.
There were six Limerick players on the goal line. Dooley found a gap between Ciarán Carey and David Clarke. Limerick’s lead was down to two. And, as Quaid always maintained, he found a teammate with that puckout. Ger Hegarty, father of current Limerick star Gearoid, caught the ball in midfield going backwards and, as he turned, was tackled by Offaly sub Michael Duignan. The ball popped out, Johnny Pilkington mopped up the break and launched it into O’Connor’s path.
Kelly, one of the more understated players on that Offaly team, also set up one of those Billy Dooley points and Troy assisted another in what was arguably the only fully intended stickpass during that madcap period of play. So, given how the game was back then, there was a higher premium on breaking ball. Offaly won eight of them after Dooley’s goal; Limerick just five.Prior to that, all of the key metrics during that game were stacking up in Limerick’s favour. But Offaly turned them around spectacularly in no time to fashion what was, in the end, a comfortable victory when, minutes earlier, a fairly feeble defeat seemed inevitable.
