Offaly will play tier one Championship hurling for the first time since 2018 this year.

As recently as 2021, Offaly were hurling in the Christy Ring Cup - now they’re on the brink of breaking into the League’s top flight.

Of course, Offaly were in the top division of the League last year, when it contained 12 teams, split into two groups of six. They couldn’t win a game, however, while the last time they were up there, in 2022, they were relegated with six defeats from as many outings. They were relegated again the following year, to the Ring Cup, from which it took them two years to emerge, while they spent another three in the McDonagh Cup, meaning that they will hurl in the Leinster Championship for the first time in seven years come April.

Fourteen of last year’s under-20 squad - Ravenhill, James Mahon, Donal Shirley, Brecon Kavanagh, Ruairi Kelly, Liam Hoare, Ter Guinan, Adam Screeney, Dan Bourke, Cathal King, Colin Spain, Ben Miller, Patrick Taaffe and Eoin Burke - are part of the wider senior panel at present. Mahon, Shirley, King, Spain, Bourke and Ravenhill all started against Dublin last Saturday, with Guinan coming off the bench.
