Through Tuesday, Cuyahoga County voters had requested 30,455 absentee ballots, about two-thirds of which were for Democrats. Tony Perlatti, director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, said he would expect that number to be closer to 80,000, based on what happened four years ago. The national political environment is much different in 2022 than in 2018. This year’s election also is expected to be a more favorable national climate for Republicans, in part due to the typical opposite-party backlash against incumbent presidents.
