, scientists concluded that carbon emissions need to fall rapidly in the coming decades to avoid environmental catastrophe. But with immediate action to curb those emissions looking more and more unlikely, researchers say change is now inevitable.
Educating the public on the practical implications of a warming world is a good starting point, “but then you have the downside of not having an integrated, holistic view of what is happening on the ground,” he said. And the seemingly glacial pace of temperature increases belies the notion that a warming planet is an immediate threat. Average global temperatures have risen by more than 1 degree Celsius since the turn of the century, which seems like a low number to most people, said Geoff Dabelko, associate dean of the George V. Voinovich School of Public Service at Ohio University.
“Municipal wastewater systems are being tested in ways they wouldn't be if storms were spread out,” he said.
